Ann Carol Crispin, également connue sous le nom de A.C. Crispin, était une auteure américaine très respectée, principalement reconnue pour ses romans de science-fiction. Née le 5 avril 1950 à Stamford, dans le Connecticut, elle est décédée le 6 septembre 2013 à Waldorf, dans le Maryland. Crispin a obtenu son baccalauréat en littérature anglaise en 1972 à l'Université du Maryland et a entamé sa carrière de romancière en 1983. Elle a rapidement acquis une renommée pour son talent à créer des backgrounds captivants pour les personnages de divers médias, ce qui lui a valu le surnom de "Reine de l'arrière-plan".
Au cours de sa carrière, Crispin a écrit plus de vingt romans, dont la série Starbridge, qui figure sur la liste des best-sellers du New York Times. Cette série, désormais disponible en ebooks Kindle et livres audio, se déroule dans une école pour jeunes diplomates, traducteurs et explorateurs située sur un astéroïde éloigné de la Terre. En plus de ses œuvres originales, Crispin a également écrit plusieurs romans adaptés de films, se déroulant dans les univers de Star Wars, Star Trek et Pirates des Caraïbes. Elle a été nommée Grandmaster en 2013 par l'International Association of Media Tie-In Writers.
Crispin a également été une figure importante de la Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, occupant les postes de directrice régionale de l'Est et de vice-présidente. Avec Victoria Strauss, elle a fondé Writer Beware, un groupe "sentinelle" qui met en garde les écrivains en herbe contre les dangers des agents, éditeurs et maisons d'édition escrocs. Writer Beware, fondé en 1998, a aidé les autorités chargées de l'application de la loi et les autorités civiles à suivre et à fermer les escroqueries liées à l'écriture.
Crispin était mariée à l'auteur de science-fiction Michael Capobianco. Elle est décédée le 6 septembre 2013 à l'Hospice of Charles County à Waldorf, Maryland, à l'âge de 63 ans. Sa légende perdure à travers ses nombreux romans et l'impact positif qu'elle a eu sur la communauté des écrivains.
