Alexander McCall Smith est un auteur très prolifique et populaire, principalement connu pour sa série très réussie "No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency". Né à Bulawayo, Rhodésie (maintenant Zimbabwe) le 24 août 1948, il détient la nationalité britannique et réside actuellement en Écosse.
McCall Smith est l'auteur de plusieurs séries, dont "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency", "Professor Dr. Von Igelfeld Entertainment", "Isabel Dalhousie", "44 Scotland Street", et bien d'autres. En plus de ses œuvres de fiction, il écrit également des livres de droit médical et de bioéthique non fiction. Avant sa carrière d'écrivain, il était professeur de droit à l'Université du Botswana et professeur émérite de droit médical à l'Université d'Édimbourg en Écosse.
La série "No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency", qui a vendu plus de vingt millions d'exemplaires, a apporté à McCall Smith un grand succès et lui a permis de consacrer son temps à l'écriture de fiction. Ses œuvres ont été traduites en plus de quarante-six langues et sont devenues des best-sellers dans le monde entier. En plus de ses séries, McCall Smith a écrit de nombreux livres autonomes, tels que "La's Orchestra Saves the World", "Trains and Lovers: A Hearts Journey" et "Emma", une réécriture de la classique Jane Austen. roman. Il a également écrit plus de trente livres pour enfants, des œuvres académiques et des collections de nouvelles.
