Alice McDermott est une romancière américaine accomplie et professeure des Humanités à l'Université Johns Hopkins. Elle est née à Brooklyn, New York, le 27 juin 1953 et a fréquenté l'école St. Boniface à Elmont, Long Island, NY, le Sacred Heart Academy à Hempstead, NY, l'Université d'État de New York à Oswego, où elle a obtenu son diplôme de BA en 1975, et l'Université du New Hampshire, où elle a décroché sa maîtrise en 1978.
En tant qu'enseignante, McDermott a connu une carrière réussie, ayant enseigné dans diverses institutions telles que l'Université Américaine, UCSD, Hollins College, Lynchburg College et l'Université du New Hampshire. Elle a également été écrivaine en résidence à Hollins College et Lynchburg College en Virginie. Ses nouvelles ont été présentées dans plusieurs prestigieux magazines littéraires, notamment Ms., Redbook, Mademoiselle et Seventeen.
En tant qu'auteure, McDermott a reçu une reconnaissance significative pour son travail. En 1987, elle a reçu le Whiting Writers Award et a été nommée trois fois pour le Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
