Arthur Conan Doyle, également connu sous le nom d'Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle, était un auteur écossais et médecin né à Édimbourg en mai 1859 et décédé en juillet 1930. Il est largement considéré comme l'un des plus grands écrivains de fictions policières, particulièrement réputé pour sa série Sherlock Holmes. Conan Doyle a été éduqué dans une école jésuite romaine catholique à Hodder Place, Stonyhurst, et a étudié la médecine à l'Université d'Édimbourg de 1876 à 1881. C'est durant ses études à l'université qu'il a commencé à écrire des histoires.
La première publication de Conan Doyle a eu lieu lorsqu'il avait 19 ans, et sa carrière d'écrivain a continué de prospérer même après l'obtention de son diplôme. Il a exercé comme médecin lors d'un voyage en steamship vers la côte ouest de l'Afrique et a obtenu son doctorat en 1885. En 1885, il a épousé Louisa Hawkins Doyle, avec qui il a eu deux enfants. Suite au décès de sa femme en 1906, il s'est marié avec Jean Elizabeth Leckie en 1907, et ils ont eu trois enfants ensemble.
La création la plus célèbre de Conan Doyle est Sherlock Holmes, un détective brillant mis en scène dans une série d'histoires, dont "Le Chien des Baskerville" (1902). Il a également été un auteur prolifique de livres d'histoire non fictionnels, de romans d'amour, de science-fiction, de pièces de théâtre et plus encore. Malgré son succès en tant qu'auteur, Conan Doyle est resté médecin tout au long de sa vie. Il a été un défenseur passionné de diverses causes, telles que la réforme des lois sur le divorce, le tunnel sous la Manche, et la distribution de gilets de sauvetage gonflables aux marins. Il a également plaidé pour l'innocence de certains individus et a été médecin bénévole pendant la guerre des Boers. Dans les dernières années de sa vie, il s'est converti au spiritualisme. L'œuvre majeure de Conan Doyle, la création de Sherlock Holmes, reste un classique intemporel et un témoignage de son talent de conteur.
