Bart D. Ehrman est un éminent universitaire et auteur dans le domaine des études du Nouveau Testament et des Premiers Chrétiens. Il est né le 5 octobre 1955 à Lawrence, au Kansas, et a grandi dans le Kansas et l'Illinois. Ehrman a étudié au Wheaton College en Illinois, où il a obtenu son diplôme de premier cycle. Il a ensuite poursuivi ses études à la Princeton Theological Seminary, où il a obtenu une maîtrise en divinité et un doctorat.
Ehrman occupe la chaire James A. Gray Distinguished Professor à l'Université de Caroline du Nord à Chapel Hill (UNC) depuis 1988. Avant sa nomination à l'UNC, il a enseigné à l'Université Rutgers pendant quatre ans. Pendant sa carrière à l'UNC, Ehrman a occupé divers postes de direction, dont celui de président du Département d'études religieuses et de directeur des études supérieures. Il est un universitaire accompli et prolifique, ayant publié 21 livres, de nombreux articles savants et des dizaines de critiques de livres dans son domaine. Parmi ses œuvres les plus remarquables figurent "Misquoting Jesus" et "God’s Problem", qui ont tous deux été des best-sellers du New York Times.
Les domaines d'expertise d'Ehrman incluent le Jésus historique, les apocryphes chrétiens primitifs, les Pères apostoliques et la tradition manuscrite du Nouveau Testament. Il a reçu plusieurs prix et subventions pour son enseignement et sa recherche, dont le prix UNC Undergraduate Student Teaching Award, le Phillip and Ruth Hettleman Prize for Artistic and Scholarly Achievement et le Bowman and Gordon Gray Award pour l'excellence en enseignement.
Ehrman est marié à Sarah Beckwith, Marcello Lotti Professor of English à Duke University. Il a deux enfants, Kelly et Derek. Il réside actuellement à Durham, en Caroline du Nord.
