Carolyn Gimpel Hart est une auteure américaine à succès, renommée pour ses romans de mystère « cozy ». Elle a écrit de nombreux livres sous son vrai nom ainsi que sous le nom de plume Carolyn Hart. Parmi ses séries les plus célèbres figurent Death on Demand et Henrie O. Hart a entamé sa carrière d'écrivain en 1964 en remportant un concours d'écriture pour un roman policier destiné à des jeunes filles. Elle a ensuite écrit des mystères pour jeunes adultes jusqu'en 1972. Toutefois, pendant les 15 années suivantes, les éditeurs n'étaient pas intéressés par les mystères écrits par des femmes américaines, elle a donc plutôt écrit des suspenses autonomes. Ce n'est que lorsqu'des auteures telles que Marcia Muller, Sara Paretsky et Sue Grafton ont brisé cette barrière qu'Hart est revenue à l'écriture de romans policiers.
Tout au long de sa carrière, Hart a remporté de nombreux prix pour son travail, dont le Agatha Award, l'Anthony Award et le Macavity Award. Son livre Letter from Home (2003), un mystère autonome se déroulant en Oklahoma, a même été nominé pour le Pulitzer Prize. Hart est l'une des fondatrices de Sisters in Crime, une organisation de femmes qui écrivent des mystères. Elle est originaire d'Oklahoma City et diplômée en journalisme de l'Université de l'Oklahoma. Hart est également membre de diverses organisations professionnelles, dont les Authors Guild, Mystery Writers of America, l'International Association of Crime Writers et American Crime Writers League.
Le style d'écriture de Hart est connu pour son esprit et son humour, mettant souvent en scène des personnages excentriques et des intrigues captivantes. Dans sa série Death on Demand, Hart présente aux lecteurs Annie Darling, la propriétaire d'une librairie de mystère sur une île de la mer des Caraïbes en Caroline du Sud. La série couvre une gamme de mystères, des enquêtes de meurtre aux cas de personnes disparues. Dans sa série Bailey Ruth Raeburn, Hart adopte une approche différente, mettant en scène un fantôme roux espiègle qui revient sur terre pour aider quelqu'un dans le besoin. La série est connue pour son ton léger et ses éléments surnaturels.
