Éric Carle est un auteur et illustrateur de livres pour enfants très renommé, reconnu pour ses livres d'images à la fois magnifiquement illustrés et innovants sur le plan du design. Né à Syracuse, dans l’État de New York, Éric Carle a passé une grande partie de son enfance en Allemagne, élevé par sa grand-mère. Plus tard, il est retourné aux États-Unis pour étudier dans les écoles d'art les plus réputées du pays, telles que la Art Students League de New York et l'Académie des beaux-arts de Brooklyn.
Le travail le plus célèbre de Carle, La Chenille qui fait des trous, est un livre pour enfants adoré depuis sa publication en 1969. Le livre a été traduit en plus de 30 langues et s'est vendu à plus de 41 millions d'exemplaires dans le monde entier. Depuis le succès de La Chenille qui fait des trous, Carle a illustré plus de 70 livres, dont beaucoup il les a également écrits. Ses livres se sont vendus à plus de 71 millions d'exemplaires dans le monde entier, ce qui fait de lui l'un des auteurs pour enfants les plus prospères de tous les temps.
Le travail de Carle est caractérisé par sa technique de collage unique, qui consiste à découper et à superposer des papiers peints à la main pour créer des images détaillées et colorées. Ses livres présentent souvent des animaux et des insectes, et il utilise son art pour enseigner aux enfants sur le monde qui les entoure. Carle a déclaré qu'il crée ses livres pour combler l'écart entre la maison et l'école, pour rendre la transition d'un environnement familier à un environnement moins intimidant pour les jeunes enfants. Il croit que les enfants sont naturellement créatifs et désireux d'apprendre, et ses livres visent à rendre l'apprentissage amusant et attrayant.
Carle est également un défenseur des arts et a créé le musée Eric Carle de l'art du livre d'images à Amherst, dans le Massachusetts, qui vise à inspirer l'amour de l'art et de la lecture chez les enfants.
