Philip José Farmer est un auteur américain très respecté, principalement connu pour son travail dans les genres de science-fiction et de fantasy. Il est né à Terre Haute, dans l'Indiana, en 1918 et a passé la majeure partie de sa vie à Peoria, dans l'Illinois. Farmer est largement reconnu pour sa contribution au domaine, ayant remporté trois prix Hugo et étant nommé maître Nebula. Son écriture se caractérise par l'utilisation innovante de thèmes sexuels et religieux, ainsi que par sa fascination pour les héros de pulp légendaires.
L'œuvre de Farmer est peut-être la plus connue pour ses séries Riverworld et World of Tiers. La série Riverworld, qui comprend des romans tels que "To Your Scattered Bodies Go" et "The Dark Design", suit les aventures d'un groupe d'individus qui se retrouvent ressuscités sur une rivière mystérieuse qui s'étend sur toute la planète. La série World of Tiers, quant à elle, est une série de science-fiction plus traditionnelle qui explore l'idée de mondes artificiels créés par une race avancée.
Outre ses œuvres originales, Farmer est également connu pour sa contribution au domaine de la fiction pulp. Il a écrit des biographies de Tarzan et Doc Savage et était fasciné par la mythologie des héros de pulp légendaires. Farmer a également écrit des œuvres pseudonymes avec humour, présentées comme écrites par des personnages fictifs, contribuant ainsi à la mythologie de ces personnages classiques. On pense qu'il a utilisé plus d'une dizaine de pseudonymes au cours de sa carrière.
L'écriture de Farmer est souvent comparée à celle de Ray Bradbury, les deux auteurs étant considérés comme des provinciaux excentriques qui aimaient repousser les limites de la science-fiction.
