Stella Duffy est une auteure anglaise très respectée, reconnue pour ses travaux dans les genres de la science-fiction, du mystère et de la fiction historique. Elle a écrit plusieurs séries de livres, telles que la série Saz Martin, la série Novel of Empress Theodora et la série Roderick Alleyn, qu'elle a co-écrite avec l'auteur Ngaio Marsh. Duffy a également rédigé de nombreux romans, novellas et collections de nouvelles indépendantes.
Née le 2 mars 1963 à Woolwich, Londres, au Royaume-Uni, elle a passé sa jeunesse en Nouvelle-Zélande. De retour à Londres dans les années 1980, elle y réside depuis. Au cours de sa carrière, Duffy a écrit dix-sept romans, plus de soixante-dix nouvelles et quatorze pièces de théâtre. Son travail lui a valu plusieurs distinctions, dont deux prix Stonewall de l'écrivain de l'année et deux dagues CWA du meilleur récit de court métrage. Deux de ses romans, The Room of Lost Things et State of Happiness, ont été présélectionnés pour le Orange Prize.
Outre sa carrière d'écrivain, Duffy est également professeure de yoga et psychothérapeute existentialiste en formation. Elle a cofondé la campagne Fun Palaces pour la démocratie culturelle, une initiative visant à offrir un accès gratuit et inclusif aux arts et aux sciences à tous. Son dernier roman, Lullaby Beach, a été publié par Virago. Les recherches doctorales en cours de Duffy portent sur l'expérience incarnée d'être postménopausée.
